The HARMONIA project is a joint research collaboration project undertaken between the RUAG Schweiz AG and the Communication Systems Group CSG of the Department of Informatics IfI at the University of Zürich UZH. HARMONIA investigates Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6) for tactical networks. SRv6 will be used to optimize the routing behavior of traditional tactical networks based on IPv6. This includes a segment routing mechanism itself and comprises the actual path computation algorithms, signaling mechanisms to collect information about the network’s base topology and link properties, to control segment routing via a path configuration on edge routers, and a Software Defined-networking (SDN)-based network controller architectures.

HARMONIA will improve and complement, but not replace, traditional distributed shortest path routing, referred to as base routing. Major improvements are expected via the segment routing integration and will include a better usage of available redundant links (e.g., load balancing using arbitrary paths) and the possibility to take the link utilization into account for routing decisions. To demonstrate such an approach, the application of segment routing algorithms and protocols will be prototyped for semi-mobile networks, which form the basis for dynamic networks, also involving mobile nodes, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
