LiveShift: Peer-to-Peer Live Video Streaming with Distributed Time-Shifting

LiveShift is a research project that investigates the integration in the distribution of live and on-demand P2P video streaming. The main principle is that, while video is transmitted through the peer-to-peer network in a live fashion, all peers also collaborate in storing past streams. This enales peers to replay time-shifted streams from other peers in a distributed and scalable manner, while seamlessly catching back up to the live stream as desired.

LiveShift Application and Protocol

Within the LiveShift project, the LiveShift application has been developed. It serves as foundation for demonstrations and evaluation of the LiveShift protocol and proposed approaches. While the application is not ready for user release, we may provide its the source code for research purposes upon contact.

LiveShift's modular architecture allows different policies to be easily implemented without affecting other parts of the system. This enables the evaluation of novel P2P and streaming algorithms.

Source Code

The source code has been published under GPL v3 at GitHub.
