During this lab course, students study the setup and configuration of wired and wireless IP networks. Linux is used as the underlying operating system. In this lab course, students have to solve exercises on different topics. The solutions are discussed and prepared in groups by the students.
The lab course will be run at multiple days, where each of them will contain a certain topic and task. The respective task descriptions will be handed out before the date, at which the practical task will be done, pre-prepared by the student in terms of a theoretical exercise beforehand at home. Typically, students will work on their own or in groups (depending on the number of applications), which solve the tasks on their own. At the last date during the fall term, each student will be required to give a presentation on a subject in the context of the seminar to show that the topics studied can be recapitulated actively.
The key requirements for a successful participation in the lab course Communication Systems include:
There is one recap date scheduled for the last week of the semester in which students, who have missed one class due to illness or similar emergencies, can complete that exercise.
The practical course is to strengthen and deepen the knowledge within the range of the communication systems by practical tasks.
The tasks include topics about:
Towards the end of the semester, every student has to give an individual presentation (no group presentation). In case there are many students participating in the course, there two afternoons will be reserved for presentations. A list of potential topics and final instructions will be provided around the middle of the semester. However, students are encouraged to come up with their own topics, which should be coordinated with the supervisors before preparing the presentation.
Instructions:
- Prepare a talk of 10 minutes. After each talk, there will be room for questions.
- The presentation must include the following:
- Cover slide (titel, name, date, Communicaions Systems Lab Course, IFI, UZH)
- 5 to 10 content slides
- A conclusion slide
- The talk must focus on the core of the topic, don't waste time with introducing basics.
Missing Presentations
Active participation in the presentation sessions is part of the requirements to successfully complete this course and receive the ECTS. Thus, students have to be present at both presentation dates, even if they are not presenting themselves. If students miss the second presentation date, they have to hand in a written report detailing the presented topic. The report must cover 4 pages written in 2 column IEEE template ( e.g. in LaTex: \documentclass[10pt, conference]{IEEEtran}) handed in by the day of the recap date.
The lecture "Computer Networks and Distributed Systems" or "Mobile Communication Systems" is recommended highly, but formally not mandatory, in case of personal dedication to getting hold of those basics of the student's own will.
Since the lab provides a hands-on approach to the topics mentioned above, it is expected that students know the basics of administrating a GNU/Linux-based machine. We suggest to students who have no experience with a GNU/Linux (or a Unix-like one, such as macOS), to follow the first two chapters provided in the excellent guide "The Missing Semester of Your CS Education" provided by the MIT. Chapter 1 introduces shell basics and Chapter 2 introduces basic shell scripting.
Literature will be announced in the lecture. Details on the exercises can be found inLabs.
